Review: Sempre by J. M. Darhower

Officially, my new second favorite book. The first is occupied by the one that introduced me to romance novels. Sempre was a majestic, awe-inducing, nail-biting masterpiece of a story. The characters are exceptionally developed, the writing is outstanding, the best I’ve seen in a long time, and let me tell you I read about 5 or so books a week. This is a 10 out of 5 stars book. Before I keep going, let me tell you what it’s actually about.

The story revolves around Haven, a girl born into the human slavery world related to the Italian mafia, and Carmine DeMarco, an Italian mafia Principe raised by La Cosa nostra to lead a life of slaves, guns, crime and murder. Both are teenagers, but find themselves deeply and irrevocably in love as Haven deals with her new life in the DeMarco, where she was brought to as a slave. Unbeknowst to the couple, there far greater issues at hand and the reason she was brought to the DeMarco household was soon apparent as she becomes the target of many in the mob. Carmine tries desperately to not fall in the same lifestyle that took his beloved mother and wrecked his family, but circumstances make him fail and see his mistakes time and time again.
Ok, so now that you have an spoiler-free idea, let me keep praising. Humor me a minute. There is a lot of blood in this book, true, a lot of shooting, and mafia-related business. But there’s a lot of sweetness , forgiveness, redemption-seeking, determination and hope. The writing is highly descriptive, the narrative is engaging.
The book starts out with an alarming statistic :
“Human trafficking is the second most lucrative crime in the world, making more money every year than Google, Nike, and Starbucks combined. It happens everywhere, from the poverty-stricken providences of Cambodia to the affluent suburbs of California. Two children are trafficked every minute—that’s 2880 a day.”

Excerpt From: J M Darhower. “Sempre.”

Other blurbs:
“Colpo di fulmine. The thunderbolt, as Italians call it. When love strikes someone like lightning, so powerful and intense it can’t be denied. It’s beautiful and messy, cracking a chest open and spilling their soul out for the world to see. It turns a person inside out, and there’s no going back from it. Once the thunderbolt hits, your life is irrevocably changed.”
“He burst into laughter. “I think you’re delirious. How about we take that nap now before you tell me I smell like sunshine or something.”
“You do smell like sunshine.”
“And how does sunshine smell?”
“It smells like the outside world. Warm. Happy. Safe.” She paused. “Green.”
She nodded. “Green.”

One last thing… Not spoiling anything, don’t worry.
The ending. Wow. I was seriously impressed. Not only did the author manage to write one hell of a semi- cliffhanger so you know there’s more coming, it leaves you with completely satisfied at the same time. Of course, there’s still a hundred unsolved things, tons that still need to happen, but you feel satisfied with the ending and it’s not going to be a huge pain in the bum to wait for the next installment, which will hopefully be out by the end of the year.

As always, thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did.
